Department of Government Efficiency
Taxes are my largest bill every year.
The US Federal Gov takes the lion’s share. In my 20+ years of paying taxes I have contributed more than $1M to the “pot” that the Gov spends.
Where does it all go?!
Better yet: how can we spend it more wisely so each of us can keep our wealth.
This way we can save this economic energy and invest it to activate more wealth engines while taking other steps to improve the performance of our wealth system overall.
There are countless jokes about the inefficiency of the government.
My favorite is in the movie Independence Day:
“You don’t actually think they spend $20,000 on a hammer and $30,000 on a toilet seat, do you?”
Of course they do.. eventually.
First, they spend $2,000,000 forming a committee on hammers and toilets.
Next they waste $4,000,000 on polling and PR to make sure the messaging is effective, etc.. On and on it goes.
The United States Federal Government has a spending problem.
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are leading a team designed to address this massive national security and national prosperity issue.
Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
The American people are losing faith in their government.
Bureaucratic inefficiencies, ballooning national debt, and a sense that the system is rigged against the working class have created a deep chasm between citizens and their elected officials. Nowhere is this more evident than in the devastating impact of inflation on a generation of Americans who played by the rules and are now seeing their life savings evaporate.
Between 2008 and today the Federal Reserve has increased the money supply by a staggering 65%. This unprecedented expansion of currency has fueled inflation, eroding the purchasing power of the American worker and effectively devaluing decades of hard work and sacrifice. This "inflation tax" disproportionately impacts those who can least afford it, while those with assets like real estate and stocks are often shielded from its worst effects.
This situation raises serious questions about the role and responsibility of the Federal Reserve, and the broader issue of government efficiency and accountability.
To restore trust, DOGE will need to address these fundamental challenges:
1. Monetary Policy Reform:
The Federal Reserve needs to be more transparent about its decision-making processes and the potential consequences of its actions.
Mechanisms need to be in place to hold the Fed accountable for the impact of its policies on the American people.
As a country we need to explore alternative monetary policies that prioritize long-term stability and protect the purchasing power of the dollar, such as a Bitcoin Strategic National Reserve.
Some very smart folks say outright we should End the Fed. I think actioning this could catalyze a massive confidence crisis but exploring this option is important — first we need to articulate alternate systems for credit control and inflation control.
2. Fiscal Responsibility:
DOGE must develop a comprehensive plan to address the national debt and reduce our reliance on inflationary monetary policies.
As a part of this effort the team will identify and eliminate wasteful spending programs, prioritize essential services, and streamline bureaucratic processes.
A major element of this is tax. DOGE should suggest a fairer and more efficient tax system that promotes economic growth and reduces the burden on working families.
The tax code was 1.5M lines in the 1950s and now its over 15M lines — we can add by reducing here.
3. Government Efficiency:
We must reduce red tape, eliminate redundant agencies, and simplify regulations to promote efficiency and innovation.
DOGE shouldn’t just be cutting costs.
They should be investing, too.
Invest in technology to modernize government operations, improve service delivery, and increase transparency.
Use software to implement performance-based metrics to ensure accountability and track progress towards efficiency goals.
Speaking of cutting…
Do we really need a Department of Education?
Aren’t the states supposed to be running their show + competing for immigration from other US Citizens in other states using schools, tax code, laws, beautification and other means?
Do we really need a Department of Agriculture?
Do we really need a Department of Energy, even? I know DoE contains agencies related to Nuclear and other elements vital to NatSec… but they can be moved to the DoD.
Rebuilding trust in the federal government will require a commitment to transparency, accountability, and a genuine effort to serve the interests of all Americans. By addressing the root causes of inefficiency and restoring faith in our institutions, we can create a more just and prosperous future for all.
That is the mission of DOGE.
How DOGE Will Help
Elon gets into the weeds. He likes an engineer-heavy meeting filled with people who know the current problem well and potential solution(s) alongside implications. He’s going to bring this to DOGE.
Vivek is a hands-on biotech founder with deep expertise in company operations from the capital stack to people ops and everything in between. He’s going to look at each Dept and every line item as if he were an investor in the US (he very much is, we all are) and ask “why is this here? how does this help us?”.
Both E and V are built to make things run more efficiently.
The DOGE mission is to enhance the operational efficiency of the United States Federal Government by comprehensively reviewing spending, evaluating program effectiveness, and proposing structural and procedural reforms.
Because people lead to policy I propose DOGE should be composed of people with a track record of results in highly competitive business arenas with a focus on both public and private sector experience. It is unknowable how much of the US budget is obscured in black budgets and behind other accounting walls -- DOGE will need representation across all security valences.
DOGE needs curious people. DOGE needs data-driven and analytical minds who have demonstrated the ability to navigate restructuring and optimization campaigns.
Find The Problem
The primary objective of DOGE is to create a restructuring proposal for the US Federal Government.
It would start by developing standardized rubrics to evaluate the effectiveness of spending in relation to stated program goals and outcomes. You can't analyze something unless you agree on what is being measured, what tools we're using and how we will interpret those results.
With that in hand DOGE will then conduct a detailed analysis of federal spending across all departments and agencies. Again, I repeat, ALL activities funded by the US Government. Metrics could include quantitative measures like the number of people served, cost per beneficiary, or reduction in targeted problems. Qualitative metrics might involve surveys or interviews to assess public satisfaction and program impact.
DOGE may build specialized teams constituted to identify programs that are underperforming or redundant, and propose their elimination or alteration. They will propose changes to the organization and structure of the government, including consolidation of departments and agencies where appropriate.
If we add just the right amount of Think Tank (not too much, we'll end up right back where we started on K Street) DOGE can identify and recommend improvements to administrative and operational processes across the federal government.
DOGE needs forensic accounting talent and creative types too. It will meticulously examine federal expenditures across all departments and agencies. This would involve analyzing budget documents, financial statements, and spending patterns.
They would categorize spending based on function, program, and agency. The aim is to identify areas of potential overlap, duplication, or waste / fraud / abuse.
Data engineers are crucial to moving data from sources into machine learning pipelines and other analytic workspaces.
DOGE would analyze the functions and responsibilities of various departments and agencies. The Committee would rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of individual programs and initiatives.
As the objective aims to identify and streamline administrative and operational processes across the federal government, the Committee would analyze current workflows, procedures, and regulations to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
They would employ process mapping and lean management techniques to simplify and optimize processes. Recommendations would likely include automating routine tasks, eliminating unnecessary paperwork, and updating outdated regulations.
Elon famously enhanced the uptime and service quality of X (formerly Twitter) after he executed a successful reorganization of the X Engineering team. This included a significant decrease in headcount. Despite fewer bodies more work got done.
With these findings in hand DOGE could use data visualization and analysis tools to track spending trends over time and compare spending across different agencies and programs.
The nerds at Vivek and Elon’s disposal are very useful for this. They are also the key to leveraging ML / AI as well.
Harnessing the Power of Machine Learning
The federal government faces mounting challenges in the 21st century: a rapidly evolving global landscape, complex societal issues, and growing citizen expectations. To navigate these complexities and deliver effective services, the government must embrace innovative solutions. Machine learning offers immense potential to revolutionize government operations, improve efficiency, and enhance citizen engagement.
Let’s look at a few of the most valuable use cases.

Government bureaucracy is often plagued by slow processes, redundant paperwork, and manual data entry. ML can automate these tasks, freeing up valuable time and resources.
Automated Document Processing: ML algorithms can analyze and classify documents, extract relevant information, and route them to the appropriate departments, significantly reducing processing times for applications, permits, and other requests.
Intelligent Chatbots: AI-powered chatbots can handle routine inquiries, provide information, and guide citizens through complex processes, reducing the burden on human staff and improving response times.
Predictive Maintenance: ML can analyze data from government equipment and infrastructure to predict potential failures, enabling proactive maintenance and preventing costly downtime.
2. Enhancing Decision-Making:
Government agencies often grapple with vast amounts of data. ML can help analyze this data, identify patterns, and extract valuable insights to inform better decision-making.
Data-Driven Policymaking: ML models can analyze historical data and simulate the impact of different policy options, helping policymakers make informed decisions based on evidence and potential outcomes.
Resource Allocation: ML can optimize resource allocation by analyzing needs, predicting demand, and identifying areas where resources are most needed, ensuring efficient utilization of taxpayer dollars.
Fraud Detection: ML algorithms can detect anomalies and suspicious patterns in financial transactions, helping identify and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse within government programs.
3. Improving Citizen Services:
ML can personalize and improve the delivery of citizen services, making government more responsive and accessible.
Personalized Recommendations: ML can analyze citizen data and preferences to provide personalized recommendations for government programs, services, and information, improving citizen engagement and satisfaction.
Targeted Outreach: ML can identify individuals who may be eligible for specific government programs or assistance, enabling proactive outreach and ensuring that citizens receive the support they need.
Accessibility: ML-powered tools can translate languages, provide real-time captioning, and offer other accessibility features, making government services more inclusive and accessible to all citizens.
By embracing machine learning and implementing it responsibly, the federal government can unlock significant efficiencies, improve decision-making, enhance citizen services, and strengthen national security.
This transformative technology offers a pathway towards a more effective, responsive, and citizen-centric government in the digital age.
Technology is a key lever for DOGE.
People and Process are even more important than technology platforms… so the key to the Department of Government Efficiency’s success will be building out a skilled and passionate team.
